The funeral of the 18-year-old suspected killer of French teacher Samuel Paty, named as Abdullakh Anzorov, was held in the Chechen village of Shalazhi on Sunday. Footage from the event shows approximately 20 men taking part in the funeral procession.
On October 16, the attacker was chased from the site and shot dead by police nearby in Eragny-sur-Oise. 47-year-old history teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded outside his school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris. The teacher had recently shown caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech.
According to its legislation, France gives the bodies of terrorists for burial at their relatives' request or buries them in the cemeteries of communes at the expense of the state. According to media reports, Anzorov's body was delivered to Chechnya via Turkey after the end of the investigation on Saturday.
As the Grozny TV channel reported, the attacker's relatives noted that the Chechen authorities also took part in the process of returning his body to Russia.
An adviser on human rights to Chechen authorities, Kheda Saratova, has stated that Anzorov was buried at a traditional Muslim ceremony in compliance with all Islamic canons.
Imam of the Shalazhi village, Adam Alimkhanov, said the funeral procession was held per COVID-19 restrictions in place in the region.
"As you can see, everything is fenced with a tape at the funeral. Nobody is sticking around after they express condolences, except for relatives," he noted.
